Threat levels in the age of anxiety
2009 April 29
How many threat levels can you think of? If you can think of more, post them. Off the top of my head, I can think of three.
- Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock
- Homeland Security Threat Level
- WHO’s pandemic alert.
These are fun. Someone should come up with a formula that indicates an overall level – General Danger Level? Net Fear Index? – that takes into account evey major threat quantifier.
UPDATE: I have found more threat levels to follow, which let one know what emotions to feel.
- Threatcon by Symantec, which I don’t understand
- Create your own threat level!
- Mexico’s version
- My personal favorite so far, the volcano threat level

Mine has something to do with a pages to write/days remaining ratio. There are additional variables that I’ve not yet figured into the equation, which remains problematic but certainly induces massive amounts of anxiety. However, since I am the only person who cares, the relative threat may actually appear low. I think the situation whereby a single person (me) bears almost the entire weight of a massive threat makes me a superhero.
